Hype…..
Thursday, August 7th, 2008With sports lately, it’s all about the hype. Is it just me or are you as sick of the Brett Favre story as I am? You’d think ESPN was the all Brett channel lately. He officially is a NY Jet now, which means we Bills fans are stuck with him twice per season now. I think it’s gonna be a tough go for him in NYC. The team isn’t that good, and the fans and media are b-r-u-t-a-l. He’ll probably prove me wrong, but I really think Favre has tarnished his legacy. I always looked up to him before this mess he created (with help from the Packers management). He is a lock to make the hall of fame, and you can’t argue his success. But the way he handled this “retirement” was way beneath the dignity he has always projected. Even though the Packers didn’t handle the situation as gently as they could have, I just have a strong feeling that unless Brett is a savior for the Jets, his image has taken a deep hit. We’ll see how it all plays out (because ESPN and the networks will make sure we see it all the time).
How would you like to be that kid who replaced Favre in Green Bay? Aaron Rodgers is in a classic “no win” situation. Either he wins a Super Bowl, or he’ll forever be the guy who ran Brett out of Green Bay and couldn’t fill his shoes. Ouch! No pressure there. Good luck kid…..
Now, get ready for the hype of the Summer Olympics. Again, it’s probably me, but I’m already getting burnt out by the Olympic hype. And most of the Games haven’t even begun, except the Team USA women’s soccer team has already proven how much they miss our own Abby Wambach. Poor Abby….she worked her butt off to help Team USA go for the gold, and had that terrible injury that she’s now rehabbing. So she misses a chance to be a hero, which apparently her teammates need badly. But, back to my point…..with all the time NBC is devoting to the Games in China, and all the ads, the merchandising…it’s Olympic overload. And we are just starting. The hype is kicking into the highest gear possible. So, good luck with the overload. I myself will be out livin my life as usual, not planted in front of the tube watching while summer slips away.
Speaking of which, I’ll be enjoying Frontier Field tonight while PA announcing the Red Wings game at 7:05. There’s not much baseball season left, and there’s no better place to take it all in than Frontier Field. Hope you can squeeze some Red Wings action in between breaking news updates about Brett Favre and the Olympics. Reject the hype….support the local boys. And please always support the real heroes who never get any hype….God bless our troops.
